What is the Microfoam made out of?
Microfoam can be made out of a variety of sclerosant medications however here at our office we prefer to use polidocanol (brand name Asclera) because of its low risk of side effects. Asclera is a detergent type of medication that injures the endothelium (inner lining) of veins, causes the vein to stop flowing and then eventually close down. Asclera has been well studied and has been approved by the FDA since 2010 for both the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins.
How is Ultrasound Guided Microfoam Sclerotherapy performed?
During your procedure we will first start by sterilizing your skin with antiseptic, followed by applying local anesthetic to make sure to minimize pain and discomfort. Using the ultrasound machine we will locate the faulty veins we wish to inject. We will then use a small needle, followed by a small catheter and slowly inject the solution into the diseased veins.
After the treatment is completed we will place compression stockings on you, and It is recommended upon leaving the office that you walk for about 30 minutes before getting into your car. It is also expected that your legs be achy and tender to touch after the anesthesia wears off. You may also notice swelling or redness in areas treated, this is normal. It is recommended you take antiinflammatory medications such as motrin, aleve or advil for any pain you may have.
What does Post-Treatment care consist of?
After the procedure it is expected that you use your compression stockings for 7- 10 days, with the first 24 hours uninterrupted. It is important to understand that compression stockings will help to keep the treated veins closed and also help with the healing process. Compression stockings also help to prevent blood clots after the procedure.
As far as activity it is recommended that you walk for about 30 minutes a day for the next 2 weeks. We recommend that you do not take part in any strenuous physical activity over the next week as doing so can cause veins to reopen. You should also stay away from lifting heavy objects greater than 20 lbs for the next week. We recommend not to sit for long periods of time, not to expose treated areas to direct sunlight and to stay away from hot tubs and saunas for the next week.
