Cosmetic Sclerotherapy Treatment

What is Cosmetic Sclerotherapy?

Cosmetic Sclerotherapy involves injection of a solution into the spider veins, causing them to collapse and gradually fade away. Sclerotherapy has been used to treat spider veins for many years and in the past, saline was the solution that was mainly used. However, newer solutions have come about offering less side effects. Here at Mercado Vein Solutions we prefer to use Asclera (Polidocanol) as this is an FDA approved solution, has less potential for side effects ,and is not as painful compared to saline solutions.

Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are clusters of damaged small blood vessels in the skin which appear as red, blue or purple. They are given the name “spider veins” as they have a spider-like appearance. Many patients with spider veins do not have any significant medical symptoms but consider them unsightly and as a result want to get rid of them.

Will my Spider Veins be gone with just one session?
It is important for patients to understand that in order to get optional results and have complete resolution of their spider veins, it will require more than one cosmetic sclerotherapy session. It is reported that the national average is about 2 to 5 treatment sessions for complete resolutions of spider veins.

If I need more than one session, how long do I have to wait to get the spider veins injected again?

It is important to understand that it takes about 4-6 weeks to see the final results of those spider veins that were injected with sclerotherapy. Therefore, we recommend repeat sclerotherapy after 6 weeks to allow for proper healing and to determine if another session of sclerotherapy is needed in that area. However, many times patients do not have all of their spider veins injected in one session so if there is an area that was not injected you may return at any time to inject those, and you do not need to wait 6 weeks.
Is Cosmetic Sclerotherapy painful? Will I have pain after a session?

Cosmetic Sclerotherapy is relatively painless as the needle used to inject your spider veins is very small. The Asclera solution we use is also not as painful as saline solutions used in the past.

After Sclerotherapy it is expected for you to have mild discomfort in areas treated over the next week. Sometimes patients may experience tiny “hard lumps” over areas treated, these areas of trapped blood usually occur in larger spider veins or feeder veins. This should not be confused with blood clots, as these are superficial clots at the surface of your skin and will likely be reabsorbed independently by your body similar to how bruises are absorbed. Should you develop continued pain at the sites of these lumps we will have you come to the office and have these areas drained following a small amount of local anesthesia.

What is the aftercare for Cosmetic Sclerotherapy? Are compression stockings recommended?

After Cosmetic Sclerotherapy is performed we will place a compression dressing on the areas treated. We recommend wearing compression stockings for at least 5 days post treatment during the day and they may be removed at night when you are sleeping. However, we do strongly encourage compression stockings to be used as much as possible during the subsequent period of 4-6 weeks after sclerotherapy as this will help to keep compression on the spider veins we are trying to close. Using compression stockings will help to attain better results and aid in the healing process. We recommend that you walk for at least 30 minutes after your sclerotherapy session.

You should avoid direct sunlight to areas treated as this may cause the skin overlying the areas treated to darken. Do not take hot tub baths, or get in saunas for at least 1 week.

Can I develop blood clots after Cosmetic Sclerotherapy?

The risk of developing deep vein blood clots after Cosmetic Sclerotherapy is rare when you are in the hands of a qualified vein specialist. It is possible for superficial clots to come about in the spider veins or feeder veins injected as discussed in the above section. These superficial clots are reabsorbed by the body independently or in some instances drained to accelerate the healing process.
