How do I know if I need an ultrasound of my legs?

During your initial consultation the Vein Specialist will determine if a leg ultrasound is warranted based on both your examination and the symptoms you are experiencing.
How do I prepare for an ultrasound of my legs?
There is no preparation for an ultrasound of your legs. You may eat or drink anything you please prior to your visit.

How long does an ultrasound take?

Depending on the complexity of your case usually about 30-45 minutes.

What happens during a leg ultrasound? What to expect?

A leg ultrasound is a noninvasive, painless test that checks to see if you are suffering from blood clots, or problems with your circulation. The test is performed in our office and you can expect the following:

  1. You will first lie down on your back so we can examine the deeper veins in your legs.
  2. The Vein specialist will then place water soluble gel on a handheld device called a transducer, which directs high-frequency sound waves into the arteries and veins being studied.
  3. Once your deep system is fully evaluated we will have you stand up and measure the superficial veins of your leg.
  4. During this part of the exam we will use a step stool, the Vein specialist will squeeze your calves to see how the blood is returning in your legs and look for areas of reflux.

What is the cost for an ultrasound?

Ultrasounds are usually covered by insurance as long as it is clinically indicated and there is a suspicion for venous disease. Depending on your insurance you may also have a copayment, or coinsurance.
